7 Ways To Prepare Your RV For Storage

by Terry Torres

If you are planning to store your RV for a few weeks or months, you need to prepare it for storage. Without properly preparing it, it could take more time to get it ready for traveling again. Here are a few tips for storing your RV the right way.

  1. Find the right storage location. You can store your RV at home, but you have to worry about parking near trees that could damage your RV. To protect your RV, consider leasing a space at an RV storage facility. Your RV will be safe from exterior damage and you have the added benefit of a secure site.

  2. Clean the RV. Washing and waxing your RV will help to prevent damage from dirt and the sun. While washing your RV, look for any cracks or openings in the exterior. You can likely use caulking to repair some of the openings.

  3. Test and clean the battery. While storing the RV, your battery should be connected to a maintenance charger to preserve it. Before placing it on the charger, clean it with a mixture of water and baking soda. If the battery is tested and is not fully charged, have it charged now.

  4. Cover the RV. The cover that you choose for the RV should be breathable to prevent moisture from building underneath it. The moisture can lead to mold, which can be damaging to the exterior and interior of your RV.

  5. Retract the slide outs. It is easy to overlook the slide outs during your preparations, but failing to retract them leaves them exposed to the elements. Corrosion may occur and you could be forced to replace the slide outs when you are ready to use your RV again.

  6. Remove all food and water sources. Rodents and bugs can sometimes find their way into your RV. If there are no food and water sources for them, they will likely keep moving to a new location. If you do leave food, place it in plastic bins that the bugs and rodents cannot penetrate.

  7. Lubricate the locks. The longer the locks are left untouched, the greater the chance that they will stiffen and be difficult to move. A silicone spray applied to the locks can not only provide the lubrication needed, but do so without causing rust to develop.
