Why A Large-Loop Lever-Action Rifle Is A Good Choice

by Terry Torres

If you've decided that you'll buy a lever-action rifle for hunting, your local hunting retailer or gun shop will likely have a number of different options for you to consider. While there are many features that you should consider as you search for the right firearm, one thing to think about is the size of the lever loop. As you look at different rifles, you'll notice that some models have slim loops, while others have larger loops. Here are some reasons that it's a good idea to buy a large-loop lever-action hunting rifle.

It Accommodates Larger Hands

Whenever you shop for a hunting rifle, you should assess the size of your hands. If you have hands that are on the larger side and you're leaning toward buying a lever-action firearm, a large loop will be a good choice for you. You may find that a conventional loop is simply too small to accommodate your trigger hand in a comfortable way. The bulbous shape of a large loop, meanwhile, offers plenty of room for hands that are large.

It's Ideal If You Wear Gloves

Not everyone hunts with bare hands. Hunting during the fall and winter is a popular choice for many people, and you may be among this group. If you frequently hunt during colder weather, you'll likely wear gloves. While some hunters favor thin gloves, others opt for gloves that are thicker — especially when the weather is cold. It may be difficult to fit a gloved hand into a conventional lever loop, but this isn't a problem that you'll face when you choose a rifle that has a large loop. If you already own a pair of hunting gloves, don't be afraid to take them with you when you shop. Doing so will help you to find a large loop that offers adequate space.

It Allows More Speed

You won't always be walking around with your trigger hand in the loop of your lever-action rifle. If your hand is farther back on the stock, for example, you might see your prey and need to get the firearm into a shooting position as quickly as possible. A large loop allows you to slide your hand into place quicker and easier. Conversely, a smaller loop can be more challenging to slide into when you're in a hurry. Speak to a salesperson at your hunting goods store or gun shop to look at different lever-action rifles with large loops.
