Tips for Taking Your Kids on a Fishing Charter Adventure

by Terry Torres

If you're looking for a fun way to spend time in nature with your family, consider a deep sea fishing charter. Kids love being on the water as much as adults do. A half or full day of fishing is a fun way to spend time together as a family, and if the kids get tired, they can always take a relaxing nap on the boat.

Charter boats are nice for family trips because your family and those you invite to come with you have the boat all to yourself. The boat has a captain too, but you won't have to share the boat with any rowdy strangers, so the trip will be safe and fun for kids. Here are a few tips for taking your kids deep sea fishing.

Take Weather Protection

Be sure to take sunscreen and sunblock so you and your kids don't get a bad sunburn. The sun reflects off the water when you're deep sea fishing, so you can get a sunburn more easily.

You may also want to take light jackets in case it rains or the breeze gets cool. Weather is unpredictable along the ocean, so plan the trip for a mild weather day but be prepared for temperature shifts due to changing weather.

Take Snacks, Drinks, and Medications

Some deep sea fishing charters include sack lunches, snacks, and drinks. Find out in advance what comes with your trip and what you need to supply. Even if the charter boat is well stocked, you may still want to take your kids' favorite snacks, drinks, and toys to keep them entertained if fishing is slow.

You may also want to take medications your family uses regularly and motion-sickness pills to curb nausea that might ruin someone's fun. You'll probably be on the boat for several hours, so try to think of everything you'll need and bring it with you if you're allowed.

Learn About Regulations

Your charter boat captain will explain the regulations of the state where you're taking your vacation. You might need to buy a license for everyone in your family, so you may need to do that in advance of your trip.

There will probably be rules on the type of fish you can keep and the size and weight of fish you have to throw back. The captain will help with these regulations.

Let the Captain Choose the Gear

A deep sea fishing captain does much more than just operate the boat. In fact, the boat may be on autopilot most of the time so that the captain can assist you on the deck. The captain knows where the best fishing usually is during certain types of weather, so they'll do their best to make sure you and your kids have fun.

The captain can also choose the right equipment for you and your kids. You might be after a trophy fish, but your kids will probably enjoy quick catches of small fish they can admire and identify before they throw them back. You can save some fish to take home for supper, and your captain may even clean the fish for you so that all you have to do is cook it when you get home
