Purchasing A Boat? Parts You Should Also Purchase

by Terry Torres

A boat can be fun for everyone, but it can be even more enjoyable if you purchase the right parts to go along with it. Below are two of these parts you can get started with and then you can add more.

Global Positioning System

A global positioning system (GPS) can do many things but is especially useful if you like to fish. The GPS will show you where the fish are while you are fishing. This will display on a screen that mounts on your boat dash. More advanced GPS systems let you track your course and create maps that you can save showing where you were when you caught your fish. This way you can use the GPS system to go back to this area. Most systems have maps that are preinstalled, and you can install other maps if you wish.

GPS systems show where there are water hazards, such as structures in the water that would hit your boat if you drove over them. You install a GPS tracker app on your smartphone that goes with the GPS system. A GPS tracker can track your boat no matter where it is.  For example, if someone were to steal your boat you would know exactly where it is located using the app.

Anchor

All boats should have an anchor on board. Think about your boat breaking down in the middle of a lake. Your boat would drift if it was not secured in some way, and you could do nothing about it. An anchor will allow you to keep your boat secured in the spot where you break down. To be safe, purchase more than one anchor so you have a spare.

There are different types of anchors on the market that you can purchase, such as the claw, fluke, and plow. The claw is commonly used with many boaters. This is because this anchor works well in a variety of sea or lake bottoms, such as coral, rock, sand, and mud. The fluke anchor is also popular and is made of lightweight, durable aluminum. This anchor works well in sand and mud but does not work well on other types, such as hard surfaces. The plow anchor has a very sharp hook so it can easily penetrate any type of sea or lake bottom.

You can find boat parts online through many websites or at most local boat dealerships, such as Boater's Landing.
