5 Tips For Hosting A Murder Mystery Party

by Terry Torres

Are you planning on hosting a murder mystery party? This is definitely something that you don't want to go into without any advice, and these tips will help make it the best experience possible.

Plan For The Proper Party Size

When selecting a murder mystery party game to play, it's important to keep the size of your party in mind. There are some games that are specifically designed for larger groups and others that are designed for smaller groups. Make sure that you pick the right size for your gathering so that you meet the minimum requirements for the number of people needed.

Get Input To Decide On A Theme

Once you know who will be attending, ask your guests to decide on a theme. Pick two or three murder mystery themes that interest you the most, and then get their input on what they want to play. Having party guests who are enthusiastic about the theme means that they are going to be more likely to dress up in elaborate outfits and play their part all night long.

Assign Roles To The Right People

Your murder mystery is going to have required roles and additional roles to be flexible with your party size. Pay attention to who gets each role, since those required roles are going to be essential to the story. You will want people to play those roles that are outgoing, animated, willing to play along with the theme, and stay in character. The essential roles are also going to be providing key information over the course of the night, while the additional roles only provide supplementary information. Don't have someone that is more of an introvert playing an essential role if it can be avoided, because they may not play the role as required to make the game enjoyable.

Create Name Tags For Everyone

It can get very easy to confuse who is who when you are pretending to be another person. It will help to create name tags with everyone's character name so that you can keep track of who is who. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, since it can just be a sticker that they put on top of their clothes.

Get Someone Not Attending To Help Set Things Up

Setting up a murder mystery night involves a bit of prep work with putting instructions and tasks in envelopes. If you are playing a role in the murder mystery game, you may want to get the help of someone else not playing the game to do this. You don't want to risk seeing something on a character's information sheet that will spoil the game for you, and giving someone else that job will allow you to play along without spoilers.
