Tips To Help You Prepare For Vacation Surf Lessons

by Terry Torres

When you go on vacation to a tropical destination on the beach, surfing is one of the available sports that you can participate in and learn, even if you are a beginner. To add surfing to your vacation experience, you can take some time to get ready for your lessons and the experience. Here are some recommendations to help you prepare for your first surf lessons.

Schedule Your Lessons

When you are planning for a beach vacation, surfing lessons are usually available at a beachside resort or home, or with a local surfing school geared toward tourists—such as Aqua Surf. Surfing is a great way to be physically active and enjoy the sun, water, and surf, so contact your hotel or resort about recommendations for a surfing school that has good ratings.

Plan for your surfing lessons in advance and schedule them in plenty of time before your vacation so you can ensure a spot. Ask questions of the surfing trainers to find out what to expect and what you need to bring for your lessons. They can give you pointers about what to wear, what to bring, and how long to expect for your lessons.

Prepare Yourself Physically

It is also important to make sure you are physically ready for spring lessons. Surfing is a physical sport in which you need to be somewhat physically fit. You will be balancing on a surfboard and will also need to have the stamina for paddling on your board and standing up on the board from a lying position. This pop-up technique is something you can practice before you start your lessons.

Work on quickly moving from a position on your stomach to an upright standing position with your feet centered on a surfboard. This can require you to have good upper body strength, especially in your shoulders, arms, and back where you will be using your muscles for a lot of the surfing lessons.

Bring the Right Equipment

When you ask the surf lessons staff what you should bring to your lessons, they will tell you if you need a wetsuit or a swimsuit and what style of swimsuit is best. Depending on the weather and the water temperature in your surf lesson location, you may need to prepare for cold water with a warm wetsuit, or you can wear a swimsuit that provides adequate coverage to avoid a swimsuit malfunction in the water.

It is also helpful to wear a rash guard swim shirt to help avoid irritation from the surfboard wax and from excessive sun exposure. Then, be sure to still apply and reapply waterproof sunscreen for your skin and chapstick with sunscreen.
