Martial Arts Mastery: The Dojo Matters

Why You May Want To Consider A Martial Arts Class Or Training Program

by Terry Torres

Martial arts classes or training programs are not always about fighting, and most disciplines discourage aggressive use of the training. If you are concerned about self-defense or are looking for more than just a trip to the local gym to keep fit, martial arts classes can offer some things that can benefit you.

Finding The Right Martial Art

When considering martial arts as a way to train your body, you need to look for a discipline that aligns with your mind and body. There are many different martial arts classes available, and some concentrate on defensive training, so are well suited for someone looking for a way to defend themselves. However, there are other training programs that spend a lot of time on the discipline and alignment of the mind, body, and soul as part of the overall training.

Each type of martial arts training and the teaching you work with can offer something different. Many times martial arts masters have years of experience and have developed a program that aligns with their spiritual and physical path. So if you are looking for something like that, you may need to check out several different programs to find the one that is the best fit for you.

Physical Training

Martial arts classes are physical and offer complete body fitness in most disciplines. The workouts may not involve a lot of weight lifting time in the gym, but the endurance necessary and the training required often produces better overall fitness for practitioners than going to the gym daily.

The type of training also changes the time it takes to learn the skills, and for someone looking for martial arts self-defense classes, learning the necessary moves and techniques may be all that is necessary. The training is still very physical, but the classes are often shorter and might be something you want to take and move on.

If you are using martial arts classes for long-term training, you will often find that they are as physical as they are mental. Do some research into the different martial arts classes available in your area, and how demanding they are if you have concerns about the physical aspect of the training.

Visit the dojo you are considering, talk to the instructors, and observe some classes if you want to know more about the martial arts classes you are considering. The program needs to be a good fit for you if you are going to excel at it, and for many people, the connection with the dojo, the martial arts master, and the discipline is the first step in finding martial arts classes that are going to provide what you are looking for.
